“Cigarette smoking is dangerous to your health”

quit_smoking_4_goodOftentimes, we read in many billboards this hackneyed warning from the government itself which allows tobacco manufacturers to sell cigarettes in the market. The warning rarely pays off, although all smokers are alarmed about the fatal effects of smoking. But the mere feeling of being alarmed is not often led into quitting smoking.

The power of the nicotine to haunt smokers is very addictive, and so most smokers who haven’t been confined to hospitals due to their smoking habits have not yet made a quitting smoking plan. Common sense dictates that the best time to quit smoking is now, however, cigarette addicts will not appreciate how better it is to prevent illnesses than curing them unless their bodies wear out and their health are at serious condition.

So let us enumerate facts that are backed by researches. Studies done by medical experts have revealed the bad effects of smoking which can lead to death. Lung cancer, emphysema, bronchitis, and heart disease are just a few of the major diseases that can develop in smokers. According to studies, smokers have 12 times greater risks of acquiring lung cancer than non smokers, while the risk of acquiring heart disease is 6 times greater for smokers than those who do not smoke at all. The extreme importance and the vulnerability of the heart to harmful substances make it easily injured by cigarette smoking. This explains the findings of studies that reveal a large percentage of smokers who died because of heart disease.

Apart from major diseases, smoking can cause wrinkles as well as leave the skin dry. In other words, smoking can lead to premature ageing, as is often seen in people who have smoked for years now. Moreover, smoking can take out considerable amount of money. It is simply a waste of financial resources considering that it does not provide a single benefit to the body.

Despite all these facts, many will not understand why it is hard to quit smoking. The answer may be as irrational as getting addicted, however, addiction is the real reason why most smokers find it hard to quit smoking. Addiction connotes psychological dependence which can thwart the smokers from making a commitment to quit smoking. But this psychological dependence can be overcome by the assertion of will power. Indeed, one can quit smoking if he wills to.

A plan to quit smoking will have to begin by a strong and decisive decision to quit. Supported by a definite plan that ultimately excludes cigarettes in one’s lifestyle, a smoker can get by in a gradual manner. Perhaps, the most difficult phase happens when withdrawal effects are experienced. However, the commitment to the decision to quit smoking as well as being surrounded and supported by family and friends can make the suffering bearable.

Quitting smoking is definitely hard because it is taking something out of one’s system. However, the bountiful benefits that non-smoking provides can make one enjoy a life that is disease free and guilt free and is endowed with greater energy, vitality and enthusiasm.
