Always see those National Geographic specials about the African savannah? Always show the lions in one of two positions. They are lazily sleeping in a group under any shade they can find or that are tearing through the bushes in search of a meal.

Lions know instinctively that hunting is an activity inherently risky. Each time they go in search of food without risk. That no risk of burning without energy, if not capture prey, injury, even serious or even death when they commit to a hunt. The lions do not hunt just to hunt, hunt only when they are hungry. They do a simple calculation to determine in their minds if hunger is bad enough to risk being hurt or killed. At some point hunger wins out and left in search of a meal.

The Lions also know that the larger the animal they are hunting, the greater the likelihood of being injured. Risk of a gazelle hunting is fairly low. It is also a relatively small reward for the effort. The hunting a water buffalo, or even an elephant is a much higher risk associated with a greater reward for effort. The hunger that is, the greater risk they will for their next meal.

A reasonable alternative is simply to be a lion in the shadows and refuse to hunt, thus eliminating the risk of harming everyone. This decision also leads to starvation, a slow and painful death.

Business owners are much like that lion. We estimates of how much risk to take based primarily on the hunger that we are. The greater the hunger, the greatest risk to take. Sure, there's always the possibility of to fail. The reality is that unless we take some calculated risks that our business will ultimately starve to death slowly and painfully.

I chose to find the hunger inside, whenever I can, as a way to motivate myself to take calculated risks, right?

How hungry are you? What will you risk your hunger?
